Inter-ministerial committee recommends to take legal action against evaly
An inter-ministerial committee set up under the Commerce Ministry has recommended legal action against evaly, a controversial e-commerce platform, for violating the law.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Hafizur Rahman said this at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
He said 10 companies, including evaly, had violated the Digital Security Act, the Consumer Rights Act and the Penal Code.
"Some issues including evaly, e-Orange, Dhamaka have been discussed. They have broken the law. We will hand it over to the law enforcement agencies to take action in this regard. We have already written to the Home Ministry about evaly. I know they are working on it.”
He said at the moment they have only recommended action against evaly. After receiving the report of Bangladesh Bank, the same action will be taken against the remaining 9 e-commerce platforms.
At the press conference, Hafizur Rahman said, “We cannot guarantee to give protection to the people. However, the government will try to understand the customer's debt or product. The same is true for merchants. But if evaly smuggled the money or the money could not be recovered, then maybe the matter will be difficult. However, we will give priority to the interests of the customers. We are considering punishing the perpetrators. ”
Recalling Bangladesh Bank's recommendation to audit the finances of e-commerce companies through third-party audit firms, Hafizur Rahman said, "We will see if any ministry can conduct such audits in this way." There are some legal issues here. We will audit if we can. ”
